Why Talk to Us About Abortion?

It may seem strange for a maternity home to talk about abortion, but for many women, they’re still on the fence about making a pregnancy decision. At Lamb of God, we believe you deserve a safe place to learn about all of your options.

We never want you to feel you weren’t given the whole story. How to handle your unexpected pregnancy is one of the most significant decisions you’ll make in life. It affects your entire future.

We won’t judge, manipulate, or make up horror stories. We want to talk about your situation and your life goals objectively, and that includes having an honest discussion about abortion.

Abortion Has Physical and Emotional Consequences

In a previous blog, What Are the Risks of Abortion?, we discussed the physical risks of both medication (the abortion pill method) and surgical abortion. All abortions involve a measure of bleeding and cramping, but complications can occur when there is excessive bleeding and pain.

Today, 63% of abortions use the abortion pill method. Abortion providers, some physicians, and even some government agencies declare the abortion pill is safe and effective, but research is beginning to prove otherwise.

Physical Risks

A recent report by insurance companies found that one in every 10 women who use the abortion pill method experiences adverse effects like hemorrhaging (heavy and excessive bleeding), an incomplete abortion requiring another surgical procedure, or a visit to the ER.

Knowing the truth about what to expect is critical because you perform the abortion pill method in your home without physician oversight.

Emotional Risks

Preparing yourself emotionally is also essential. Many women say they had no idea what to expect or how they would feel.

“I had my MA (medical abortion) in April of this year, and I also wasn’t mentally and emotionally prepared. I was 8 weeks, and after everything happened, I kept replaying it in my head day and night. One of the hardest moments of my life.”    An Anonymous Reddit User

Research suggests the following:

  • Abortion is consistently associated with elevated rates of mental illness compared to women without a history of abortion.
  • The abortion experience directly contributes to mental health problems for at least some women.
  • There are risk factors, such as pre-existing mental illness, that identify women at greatest risk of mental health problems after an abortion.
