What Are the Early Pregnancy Symptoms?

Have you heard those stories about women who show up to the ER with stomach pains only to find out they’re nine months pregnant and in labor? Those are called “cryptic” pregnancies.

It’s rare not to have some pregnancy symptoms, but sometimes you can be confused if your periods are irregular. Some signs of pregnancy also resemble those of other health concerns.

Let’s take a closer look at the usual signs of pregnancy and how you can know for sure whether you’re pregnant or not.

Common Early Pregnancy Symptoms

Every woman’s pregnancy is unique. Most women experience at least some symptoms within a couple of weeks, while others may not experience any for several weeks. Here’s a list from the Mayo Clinic of the most common early signs of pregnancy:

  • A missed period.
  • Tender, swollen breasts.
  • Nausea with or without vomiting
  • Increased urination.
  • Fatigue.

Other less obvious symptoms include:

  • Moodiness.
  • Bloating.
  • Light spotting.
  • Cramping.
  • Constipation.
  • Food aversions.
  • Nasal congestion.

Many of these symptoms can also be signs of health problems. You may also experience changes in your menstrual cycle due to a hormone imbalance, stress, rapid weight gain or loss, or increased exercise.

Nausea and vomiting could be the flu, and a urinary tract infection can cause increased urination. So, how do you determine if you’re pregnant?

Taking a Pregnancy Test

Your first step is to take a pregnancy test. Home pregnancy tests are reliable, but you must follow the steps correctly. Here’s how to get a more accurate result:

  • Check the expiration date.
  • Wait until the first day after your missed period.
  • Read the instructions thoroughly before you begin.
  • Take the test in the morning when your urine is the most concentrated.
  • Follow the instructions carefully.
  • Wait the recommended amount of time before checking the results.
  • Retest in a few days to verify the results.
