First of all, you must understand that no one has the right to abuse you physically, emotionally, or sexually. You are worthy of respect, love, and care. Lamb of God Maternity Home offers a safe, supportive, and peaceful environment to determine your next step.

For immediate help, please contact the Domestic Abuse Hotline at (800) 799-SAFE (7233), the National Sexual Assault Hotline at (800) 656-HOPE (4673), or our 24/7 Helpline at (760) 715-6463. We’re here for you.

What Are Forms of Abuse?

It’s never easy to admit that your partner is the one abusing you. It’s especially difficult when it’s the father of your child. Their abuse can take many forms. The bottom line is their need to maintain control and power over you.

Domestic violence is a criminal offense in all 50 states. In addition to assaulting you physically or sexually, some forms of abuse are psychological. Here are some examples:

  • Isolating you from friends and family.
  • Belittling or humiliating you in front of others.
  • Blaming you for the pregnancy or his response to the pregnancy.
  • Using verbal aggression to scare you.
  • Demanding your full attention.
  • Promising to change, but never following through.

Did Your Abuse Begin With Your Pregnancy?

An unexpected pregnancy is stressful for everyone. If your partner already tends to be abusive, pregnancy can make it worse. According to the March of Dimes, your partner may become more abusive for the following reasons:

  • Upset because the pregnancy is unplanned.
  • Stressed at the thought of financially supporting a first baby or another one.
  • Jealous that your attention may shift from your partner to your baby.

Can Abuse Affect My Unborn Child?

Abuse during pregnancy can harm both you and your baby. Physical abuse can lead to a miscarriage or fetal injury. A low birth weight or premature birth can also result from abuse.

Emotional stress during pregnancy can lead to high blood pressure, heart disease, anxiety, and depression. It can even result in post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), which can lead to substance abuse. Statistics show that survivors of domestic abuse may continue to suffer emotionally and mentally. Getting help now is critical.

What Can I Do?

Although your partner may want to convince you that their anger is your fault, it isn’t. No one deserves abuse.

Here are some steps you may want to consider taking:

  • Always have a phone nearby and memorize your local police department’s phone number.
  • Call 911 and leave your phone open.
  • Let your healthcare provider know your situation.
  • Talk with one of the hotlines above to get suggestions for crisis intervention and referrals to local resources.
  • Make copies of all of your important papers, such as your driver’s license, Social Security card, bank account information, and health insurance cards.
  • Prepare a getaway bag with emergency resources in case you need to get away quickly.
