How Will Pregnancy Affect Me Mentally?

Every woman experiences her pregnancy differently. Some women feel every pregnancy symptom immediately, while others don’t experience anything for weeks or even months. If your pregnancy is unexpected, it’s natural to feel uncertainty, concern, and anxiety.

How your pregnancy affects you mentally will be unique to you. Some early pregnancy symptoms may affect you mentally, but you should also be aware of other signs that could mean you’re struggling emotionally.

Let’s take a closer look.

Early Pregnancy Symptoms

The Mayo Clinic lists the following as some common early pregnancy symptoms:

  • A missed period is usually the first sign of pregnancy.
  • Tender, swollen breasts.
  • Nausea with or without vomiting.
  • Increased urination.
  • Fatigue.
  • Moodiness.

Pregnancy hormones cause your physical and emotional symptoms to fluctuate. Those same hormones can make you unusually emotional and weepy. Mood swings are very common.

Even specific physical symptoms of pregnancy, like constipation or fatigue, can affect your mood and outlook.

Other Signs That Suggest You May Be Struggling Emotionally

If you’re struggling with the emotions associated with an unexpected pregnancy, you may also be dealing with anger, depression, shame, guilt, or fear. The judgment and pressure from others can also add to your struggle.

Are you experiencing any of these?

  • Persistent sadness.
  • Changes in sleep.
  • Anxiety.
  • Withdrawal or feeling isolated.
  • Loss of interest or pleasure in previously enjoyed activities.
  • Irritableness.

Coping With Mental Anxiety During Pregnancy

Studies show that up to one in five women struggles mentally during and after pregnancy. There are several things you can do to improve your mental health. If you’re unable to rebound, we encourage you to seek professional care with a counselor or therapist.

Consider doing some of these:

  • Add physical activity, particularly enjoying nature. Exercise helps you relieve stress and ultimately feel better.
  • Connect with others. Research indicates that maintaining strong social connections has a positive impact on your mental health. Discuss your pregnancy and feelings with trusted friends or family members.
  • Find activities that appeal to you outside of your normal routine. Consider yoga, a new hobby, or connecting through a book club.
