My Birth Control Failed: What Do I Do?

Unfortunately, no birth control is 100% effective. If it failed, you’re probably wondering whether you are pregnant. Your first step is to take a pregnancy test. We recommend visiting your nearest pregnancy help center for a no-cost test.

If you choose to take an at-home test, follow the directions carefully. Don’t panic—we’re here for you. Contact Lamb of God Maternity Home if you need a referral for a pregnancy help center near you.

How to Take a Home Pregnancy Test

If you take an over-the-counter pregnancy test, here are the steps to avoid getting a false-negative or false-positive result:

  • Check the expiration date.
  • Do not test until a day or two after your missed period.
  • Read the instructions thoroughly before beginning the test.
  • Take the test in the morning when your urine is most concentrated.
  • Follow the steps exactly.
  • Wait the recommended amount of time before checking the results.
  • Repeat the test in 3 or 5 days.

Getting a False-Negative Result:

A false negative means your test result says you are not pregnant when you actually are. You may be testing too early and need to wait a few more days, or you may have taken the test incorrectly.

Getting a False-Positive Result:

A false positive indicates you are pregnant when you are not. This result can happen after an early miscarriage or user error.

After a Positive Pregnancy Test

After a positive pregnancy test, you may also want to consider having an ultrasound scan, which provides valuable information about your pregnancy. You’ll learn the following:

  • How far along you are in your pregnancy.
  • The location of your pregnancy.
  • Whether your pregnancy is viable (growing) or if you have miscarried.

Many pregnancy help centers offer a no-cost, limited obstetric ultrasound scan.
