What Are the Signs of an Incomplete Abortion?

There is always the possibility of an incomplete abortion. 

Incomplete doesn’t mean the pregnancy wasn’t terminated. Your pregnancy has ended, but pregnancy tissue remains in your uterus after the abortion. 

You can experience an incomplete abortion with both surgical and medical abortion procedures. You need to be aware of the symptoms, which include bleeding, infection, and other problems.

Tissue can remain in the uterus after:

• Abortion (terminated pregnancy)
• C-section
• Miscarriage
• Vaginal delivery

Symptoms to Watch For

These are some of the symptoms to watch for if you suspect an incomplete abortion:

• Vaginal bleeding
• Heavy bleeding and blood clots
• Fever
• Pelvic pain

How is an Incomplete Abortion Diagnosed?

According to experts, an incomplete abortion occurs more often when the pregnancy ends early. It may not cause problems for days, weeks, or even months later.

Experts advise not choosing abortion drugs if you can’t make follow-up visits to your provider. That’s because an incomplete abortion is one of the known risks. They need to check to make sure the abortion is complete.

They may give you another pregnancy test to determine if you still have human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) in your urine. HCG is a hormone produced specifically when a woman is pregnant.

Another way to identify an incomplete abortion is with ultrasound. An ultrasound exam uses sound waves to create an image of the inside of your uterus.

Your healthcare provider may require dilation and curettage (D & C). This is a surgical procedure that scrapes the tissue from the lining of your uterus. Or they may use drugs.
